What is your life all about? Paul wrote, “We make it our aim to please Him. For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may receive what is due for what he has done in the body, whether good or evil” (2 Corinthians 5:9-10). Every day, you are writing the story of your life. On judgment day, Christ will read it back to you.
Read Mark 6:14-29. There we find three ways that people approach life.
King Herod tried to please everyone. He was afraid of John the Baptist who kept telling him the truth about his moral life. He was afraid of Herodias, his partner in adultery. He was afraid of unfavorable public opinion. So he tried to keep everyone happy. His approach to life left him with a nagging conscience. He’ll hear a sad story on judgment day.
Herodias aimed to please no one but herself. She couldn’t stand John’s continual call to repentance. She manipulated her lover and her daughter, and she became bloodthirsty against John. A self-centered person will hurt anyone and everyone who has the stomach to tolerate her. She’ll hear a horror story on judgment day.
John wanted more than anything to please God, and he wanted to help others please God. He lived by the standard he preached. He spoke the truth. Loyalty to God, and not consequences, was his chief concern. Jesus said, “I tell you, among those born of women there is no one greater than John” (Luke 7:28).
Will you be happy to hear Jesus read you the story of your life? Do you try to please everyone? Do you aim only to please yourself? Or do you want more than anything to please God?
