By definition, homosexuality is the “sexual desire or behavior directed toward a person or persons of one’s own sex.” In our society we are seeing a barrage of support in favor of homosexuality. It may be seen in the news media, politics, or almost anywhere that one may look. This uprising saw a surge beginning in the nineteen fifties and continuing until the present. The growing acceptance of humanism fed the flames greatly. Postmodernism is now fanning the flames with intense efforts. Such relativism undermines our basis for morality. Human perceptions and feelings take the place of God’s truth in the hearts of individuals. They become then a law unto themselves and determine what is right or wrong for them based upon their own subjective thinking and feelings. God is then left out of the picture.

This article has as its presupposition that the Bible is the infallibly inspired Word of God. Such being the case, we look to the Bible as the standard by which we determine what is right and wrong and accept what it says without doubt.

I. SOME BIBLICAL PRINCIPLES THAT MUST BE RECOGNIZED

1. God created humans male and female.

(Genesis 1:27)

So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

God in perfect manner made the helpmeet for Adam, who was woman, not another man.

2. Marriage was instituted by God and was designed for male and female, not male and male nor female and female.

(Genesis 2:24)

Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.

This was God’s will from the beginning and still applies today.

3. Sex between male and female, within marriage, is God’s plan.

(1 Corinthians 7:2)

Nevertheless, to avoid fornication, let every man have his own wife, and let every woman have her own husband.

Thus, sex with anyone (male or female), outside of marriage, is illicit sex.

The apostle Paul writing by inspiration noted that sex between those of the same sex is “against nature” and refers to it as “vile affections” and “unseemly” which carries the idea of being shameful.

(Romans 1:26-27)

For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature:

27 And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.

II. BIBLICAL TEXTS THAT DEAL EXPLICITLY WITH HOMOSEXUALITY.

1. (Leviticus 18:22, 20:13)

Vs. 18:22

Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination.

Vs. 20:13

If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them.

These texts teach that homosexuality is an abomination before God. It was hated by God to the extent that he decreed that those who were involved in such under that law must be put to death.

The context puts homosexuality along side sins such as adultery, bestiality, and child sacrifice.

2. (Romans 1:26-27)

For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature:

27 And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.

As previously mentioned this shows the sinfulness of homosexual actions. When one looks at the context of the passage beginning with Vs. 18 one can see that the degrading of God and the exalting of man in the thinking of individuals brought about these sinful actions. Such actions are not seen as a result of a “sickness” or a “disease” or something that someone is born with and thus cannot help. It is seen as sin against God.

It is also worthy to note God’s response to these homosexual actions in Vs. 28, And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient.

3. (I Corinthians 6:9-10)

Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind,

10 Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.

The New King James Version translates the word “effeminate” as “homosexuals” and “abusers of themselves with mankind” is translated “sodomites.”

Here again we find pointed condemnation of homosexuality.

Note also Vs. 11 of this text. And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.

Here we see that some of the Corinthian Christians were at one time guilty of the sins named in the previous sentence. However, they had been washed, sanctified, and justified. They had repented, changed their ways and were no longer living in that sin.

This shows that there is hope for the homosexual. He can give it up. He can repent and turn to God for forgiveness. This proves that it is something over which that person has control.

That person can handle their homosexual feelings in the same manner that one must handle a temptation to commit a heterosexual act that is illicit.

4. (I Timothy 1:9-10)

Knowing this, that the law is not made for a righteous man, but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and for sinners, for unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers,

10 For whoremongers, for them that defile themselves with mankind, for menstealers, for liars, for perjured persons, and if there be any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine;

The term, “them that defile themselves with mankind” is a word denoting a male homosexual, a sodomite. In this passage it is clearly seen as being against God’s law.

III. SOME CONCLUDING REMARKS.

God has always condemned homosexuality as a very serious sin. Many people have tried to put the blame on the Devil, their fellow man, their genes, and even God for their homosexual activities. However, the blame will always fall upon the individual involved. From whatever angle one wants to approach the subject of homosexuality, it still comes back to one’s own choice, not something that one is forced to do and cannot refrain from. God did not create homosexuals. He created a male and a female, and set forth monogamous, heterosexual marriage as the only proper place for sexual union.

It may be difficult for one to overcome their homosexual activities, yet as we have already noted from God’s word, it can be done. Our prayer is that all who have been deceived by Satan concerning this matter would repent and obey God.

(Romans 6:23)

For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
