Resolutions about diet and exercise always top two lists: (1) resolutions made, and (2) resolutions abandoned. You can make a healthier resolution.
A Reader’s Digest article announced, “How the New Science of Thank You Can Change Your Life.” Two psychology professors mustered three groups of volunteers. One group was assigned to spend each week focusing on their hassles. The second was instructed to dwell on things for which they were grateful. The third group’s task was simply to navigate life without leaning in either of those directions.
What happened? At the end of the study, those tuned in to gratitude were happier. Life was good, they had fewer headaches and colds, and they eagerly did things that were helpful to others and themselves.
I’m not surprised. The Bible prescribes, “Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you” (1 Thessalonians 5:17). The godly principle of gratitude is but one that demonstrates this truth: “While bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come” (1 Timothy 4:8). Thankfulness to God can change life now and for eternity. It nourishes the body and the soul.
Take your Bible and read Psalm 107. The inspired writer lauds God’s cures for restlessness, rebellion, sickness, and the engulfing circumstances of life. In every case, the redeemed are summoned: “Let them thank the Lord for His steadfast love, for His wondrous works to the children of men!”
