Who is Jesus? He is no mythical character. He was born in the little town of Bethlehem more than 2,000 years ago, raised in the Galilean city of Nazareth, and as a teacher gained a considerable following. Yet He was more than a man. His birth in Bethlehem was not His beginning. In fact, though He is real, He had no beginning.
To His fellow Jews, Jesus said, “Truly, truly I say to you, before Abraham was, I am” (John 8:58). What shocked His original hearers was not a sentence that sounded incomplete, but the claim that it contained. Some 1,500 years before, from a burning bush God called Moses to lead His people. Moses wanted to know what to tell his countrymen when they asked who sent him to lead them. “Say this to the people of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you’” (Exodus 3:14). Almighty God is the “I AM,” the one who has always existed and always will exist. Jesus is that great “I AM.”
Repeatedly Jesus claimed to be unique and divine. “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me” (John 14:6). Emphatically He declared, “Unless you believe that I am He you will die in your sins” (John 8:24). Encouragingly He promised, “Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live” (John 11:25).
His claims are astounding, but His miracles are convincing. Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and by believing we may have life in His name (John 20:31). May we help you to believe in Jesus?
