George Bailey (not the character from It’s a Wonderful Life) is a gospel preacher who spoke regularly to a national television audience a few decades back. One of his favorite sermons to preach is titled “Can You Recommend Your Religion?” He asks these probing questions…
Can you recommend your religion in light of the Scriptures? Every one of us should be eager to answer anyone about the hope that we have (1 Peter 3:15). The religion that is established by the Bible is the only one that meets God’s approval (1 Thessalonians 5:21, Acts 17:11).
Can you recommend your religion by the way you live? Bailey said, “If a man’s religion doesn’t change him, then he needs to change his religion!” The religion of Christ makes a person a new creature (2 Corinthians 5:17). The fruit we bear is the proof of what we believe and what we are (Matthew 7:16-18).
Can you recommend your religion by the way you support it? Is it your vocation or merely an avocation, your life or just a hobby? Jesus died to make a people His very own, a people who are eager to do good (Titus 2:14).
Can you recommend your religion by the way it supports you? When crisis comes, does it hold you up? Will it bear you up in times of physical, financial or emotional stress? Does it give you comfort when death knocks at the door?
The writer of Psalm 66 beckoned, “Come and hear, all you who fear God, and I will tell what He has done for my soul” (Psalm 66:16). Is yours the religion of the Bible? If so, it will show in your life, it will be your priority, and it will supply your every need.
