In John 8:24 Jesus said, “Unless you believe that I am He you will die in your sins” (John 8:24). What does it mean to believe in Jesus? Is it like believing that the Cardinals are the best team in baseball or that the world is round? It is more. Saving belief in Jesus must pervade every aspect of life.
True belief in Jesus means staking our lives on the truth of His death for our sins, His burial and His resurrection (1 Corinthians 15:1-4). Genuine belief in Jesus means repenting of sin, changing our minds about who will be in charge of our lives (Mark 1:15). Godly sorrow for sin leads us to make Him ruler of our hearts, thoughts and actions (Matthew 3:8). Authentic belief in Jesus rests in our hearts, comes out in our actions, and rolls off our lips. “For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved” (Romans 10:10).
Biblical belief in Jesus guides us to be baptized—immersed in water—for the forgiveness of our sins. Jesus directed, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to the whole creation. He who believes and is baptized will be saved, but he who does not believe will be condemned” (Mark 16:15-16). Bible scholar F.F. Bruce observes, “The idea of an unbaptized Christian is simply not entertained in the New Testament.”
Are you a believer in Jesus? Is your belief Biblical?
