Are you easy to recommend?
by Danny Boggs

I love getting to tell people good things about my friends.  Frequently someone needs a letter of recommendation for a job, a volunteer role, college admission, or a scholarship.  Someone else wants to know that they have found the kind of person for which they have been looking.  Just today I wrote a recommendation letter that ended this way:  “You can expect a lot from her in any role that you might give her, and she will still exceed your expectations.”

Did you know that you are regularly in need of a recommendation?  Indeed, our sin will continually paint us unworthy of what God has to offer.  John wrote, “My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin.  But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous” (1 John 2:1).  Jesus is willing to stand up and vouch for us because He became our atoning sacrifice (1 John 2:2).  He wants to be our advocate with His Father.  He wants to say that when we sin we are sorry, and we really want to do better.  He wants to say that He knows us and that we know Him and that we are eager to keep His commandments (1 John 2:3).  In this way, the blood of Jesus keeps a Christian clean (1 John 1:7,9).

Did you know that you will need Jesus’ recommendation on the Day of Judgment?  He said, “So everyone who confesses Me before men, I also will confess before my Father who is in heaven, but whoever denies Me before men, I also will deny before my Father who is in heaven” (Matthew 10:32-33).  What do your words and life say about Jesus?  What do you want Him to say about you?
